Retail Insider is an independent B2B publication reporting on the South African retail economy: store and online trade, FMCG manufacturing, logistics and supply chain, payments, and the consumer technology reshaping how the country buys.
Our Mission
South African retail is covered well at the top end, where listed results and JSE announcements draw attention, and covered poorly everywhere else. The mid-market operator, the regional distributor, the independent e-commerce brand and the supplier trying to get onto a national shelf work with far less usable information than their listed counterparts.
Retail Insider exists to close that gap. We report on the operating conditions of the trade rather than its share prices: category performance, margin pressure, channel shifts, fulfilment economics, load shedding and logistics cost, township and informal trade, and the technology decisions that separate operators who grow from operators who stall.
We are editorially independent. We are not owned by a retailer, a supplier, an agency group or a technology vendor, and no commercial relationship buys influence over editorial coverage.
Editorial Philosophy
Data before narrative
Every claim about market size, growth, share or consumer behaviour is attributed to a named source and dated. Where we use Stats SA, BankservAfrica, Nielsen, Trade Intelligence, company annual reports or regulator filings, we say so and link to the original. Where a number is our own estimate, we label it as an estimate and show the method.
Market transparency
We disclose the commercial context of what we publish. Sponsored articles, partner content and any material produced with financial support are labelled in the headline area of the article, not in small print at the bottom. Commercial links in sponsored content carry the appropriate link attributes. Our full policy is set out in the Editorial and Submission Guidelines.
Named expertise
Analysis carries a byline and a biography. Contributors state their current employer and any interest in the companies or categories they write about. We do not publish anonymous industry commentary, and we do not publish contributed articles under invented author names.
Corrections
Material errors are corrected at the top of the affected article with the date of the correction and a short description of what changed. We do not quietly edit a published claim out of existence. Corrections can be requested at ed****@**************co.za.
